CURRICULUM
Religion:
The Old Testament is the focus for 6th grade religion. We study and
read the stories that form the beginning of our faith. We
currently use
Blest are We
series to guide our study.
The school attends mass every Friday
at 9:00. We are also given the opportunity to lead various masses
throughout the school year.
We also perform "The Living Stations
of the Cross" for all three parishes during the Lenten season.
Reading:
In 6th grade, the subject of reading
is addressed in three parts.
Individual Reading: The student will be participating in
"book clubs" that meet every Monday. The students will be able to
choose from 6th grade appropriate literature. These book clubs will
allow the students to discuss and celebrate books.
Reading Groups: Throughout the year, groups of students will be
called together to work on a variety of reading skills. These skills
include the genre studies (fables, newspapers, and mythology), literary
terms, parts of a story, etc. I am currently using the Houghton
Mifflin leveled readers as the curriculum for my reading groups.
Read Aloud: I will read to the students daily from a variety of
literature.
Spelling:
The students will be working on a variety of spelling skills throughout
the year. The class will be given a weekly spelling list and some
exercises to build spelling skills such as.
The curriculum is Spelling Linking Words to Meaning published
by Steck-Vaughn.
Writing:
As the students advance through the
grade levels, the student's quality and amount of writing also
increases. In 6th grade, we strive to make all the writing as authentic
as possible. The students write for a variety purpose (fictions,
nonfiction, letters, etc.). The goal is for all published pieces to be
typed (with some exceptions) and proofread. I follow a 6 traits writing
program that focuses on ideas, organization, voice, word choice,
sentence fluency, and conventions.
Math:
6th grade math has a wide and
diverse focus. We build on the concepts of fractions, decimals,
geometry, integers, and statistics. The students are introduced to basic algebra
concepts such as constants and variables. I believe that math is a
combinations of knowing basic skills and applying them to critical
thinking problems. Our school wide curriculum is published by ScottForseman.
We also take the state wide Direct
Math Test each year.
Social
Studies:
The 6th grade focus is on
ancient civilizations. We work through many units including the
study of archeology, early humans, the Sumerians, the early Egyptians,
and the Ancient Greek and Romans. The class does many fun and
exciting project through these units.
Science:
In science we focus on environmental
education, nutrition, Newton's three laws, and cell theory. I integrate many hands-on lab opportunities into these units.
Additionally, the 6th grade has been given the wonderful opportunity to
attend the week long McCall Outdoor Science School. The 6th grade
science curriculum used Scott Foresman text books, as well as, FOSS
units.
P.E.,
Music, Band, Art, Spanish:
We are lucky to have specialists for
these classes!
Technology:
In the past few years, St. Stan's
has been blessed with two technology grants. These grants have provide
the 6th grade classroom with 6 student computers, a Smart board, an Aver
Media Device, a scanner, and a digital camera. The students create
PowerPoint presentations, word processed documents, and spreadsheets.
They compile Internet research, and work with educational software.
