 FIRST GRADE EXPECTATIONS FOR LANGUAGE ARTS

 

READING

Child Should:

Attain one-to-one correspondence to print

Recognize and identify lowercase/uppercase letters

Identify basic punctuation marks

Identify most initial and final consonant sounds

Know most vowel sounds

Blend some sounds

Hear most syllables

Recognize 30 high-frequency words

Break words into syllables

Recognize several basic word families

Compare word families

Look for word parts

Use onset and rime to create new words

Rely more on print than illustrations

Use visual cues to predict words

Compare similar words

Read punctuation

Recognize story patterns

Begin to read silently

Focus on meaning cue system

Use more than one cue at a time

Begin to self correct

Predict and confirm ideas

Read for meaning

Recognize story sequence and a sense of story

Understand character, events, problem and solution

Predict outcomes

Retell most of the story unaided

Read for own purposes during free reading time

Respond to literature

Read for enjoyment

Contribute to reading discussions

Read independently

Read with expression

See self as a reader

 

WRITING

Child Should:

Know, top, bottom, left, right

Use capital/lowercase letters

Be consistent in letter formations

Leave spaces between words

Use some punctuation and capitalization

Use beginning consonant sounds

Use some final and medial sounds

Understand letter-sound

Write letter correspondence

Write words in logical order of sentence

Read writing back

Use some correct grammar

Write familiar words

Use some word patterns

Illustrate to match words used

Write a short story of their own

Make self-guided entries in a journal

 

 

 SPELLING

Child Should:

Hear and write most consonant sounds

Use some vowel sounds in words

Use mostly phonetic spelling

Spell the way words look

Use words on word wall consistently

Correct some of own spelling

Spell with 90% accuracy high frequency words for grade level

Use Quick Word Speller

Use available print for correct spelling

Be aware of alphabetical order

 

 

FIRST GRADE EXIT EXPECTATIONS FOR MATH

 

 

Child Should:

Be able to write numbers 1-20

Be able to count to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s

Recognize numbers to 100

Know number facts to 20

Know math symbols (+, -, =, <, >)

Know the concept of greater than & less than

Be able to solve simple word problems

Be able to recognize patterns and sequence

Develop and apply strategies to solve a wide variety of problems

Relate physical materials, pictures and diagrams to mathematical ideas

Make and use estimates of measurements

Explain answers and solutions to processes

Be able to estimate with reasonable results

Describe, model, draw and classify shapes

Know fractions - whole (1), half (1/2), quarter (1/4)

Tell time to the hour and half hour

Know the value of pennies, nickels, dimes and be able to exchange coins

 

FIRST GRADE EXPECTATIONS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES

 

Child Should:

Demonstrate an understanding of the world around him/her

Demonstrate an understanding of the ways cultures are similar and different

Understand the geography of his or her neighborhood

Understand various roles and functions of family life

Understand civil responsibilities of individuals and groups

 

 

FIRST GRADE EXPECTATIONS FOR SCIENCE

Child Should:

Observe and report characteristics of things and events

Classify according to different traits

Record results of observations by drawing or writing results

Draw conclusions based on observations

Develop an understanding of the needs of living things

Exhibit a curiosity and interest in science

Predict outcomes or results based on observations

 

 

FIRST GRADE EXPECTATIONS FOR RELIGION

Child Should:

Recognize the role of God in our lives

Understand and demonstrate the ways in which we can love and are loved by God

Recite and have an understanding of the following prayers; Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Guardian Angel, Before Meal Prayers, and Sign of the Cross

Understand and know when, where, why, and how to pray

Demonstrate an understanding of the pillars of character i.e., responsibility, honesty, service, justice, perseverance, respect, excellence, forgiveness
